Mamdani Calls Out Netanyahu’s UN Attack as a Smokescreen for Gaza’s Humanitarian Catastrophe

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has a clear read on why Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu chose to call him out by name at the United Nations General Assembly last week. It wasn’t about him. It was about Gaza — or rather, about making sure the world stops talking about it.

Speaking Thursday on Theo Von’s podcast, Mamdani offered a pointed diagnosis of Netanyahu’s strategy, one that centers deflection over accountability. The situation in Gaza is dire. The humanitarian toll is staggering. And yet, rather than answer for it, Netanyahu spent time at the world’s foremost diplomatic forum picking a fight with a New York City mayor.

“All of this is an attempt to distract from responsibility,” Mamdani said. “Name as many people as possible. Try and make it into a back and forth.” The message was direct: he refuses to take the bait.

There are a few things worth holding onto here as this story develops.

The stakes here are not about two men trading barbs across a diplomatic stage. They are about whether the international community can maintain focus on what is actually happening in Gaza, where civilians continue to bear the consequences of decisions made in corridors of power far from the rubble. Mamdani seems to understand that clearly. Whether the broader political press corps does is another question entirely.
